Where We Stayed: Higgins Lake State Park South

Camping at South Higgins Lake State Park with Buster was a delightful experience. The park offers designated pet-friendly beach areas, allowing dogs to enjoy the clear waters of Higgins Lake alongside their owners. Buster particularly enjoyed the campers-only dog beach near the west campground, where he could splash in the shallow water and relax on the sandy shore. The campground itself is spacious and well-maintained, providing ample room for RVs and offering amenities such as clean restrooms and showers. With its combination of natural beauty and pet-friendly facilities, South Higgins Lake State Park is a fantastic destination for campers traveling with their furry companions.

We spent a sunny afternoon at the beach at South Higgins Lake State Park, and it was absolutely perfect. The water was gorgeous and crystal clear. It is one of the cleanest we’ve seen in Michigan. It was definitely chilly, but felt amazing after soaking up the summer sun. Right near the beach, there’s a convenient beach store where you can grab snacks, ice cream, and cold drinks. You can pick up beach gear or rent paddle boats, canoes, and kayaks. It had everything we needed for a fun and relaxing day by the lake.

Our time at South Higgins Lake State Park was everything we needed — peaceful, refreshing, and full of simple summer joy. Between the crystal-clear waters, the pet-friendly campground, and the easy access to outdoor fun, it was the perfect spot to slow down and enjoy nature. Whether you’re RV camping, swimming at the beach, hiking the trails, or just relaxing with your pup by the fire, Higgins Lake is a must-visit for anyone exploring Michigan. We’ll definitely be back!
