Top 5 RV Accessories for RV Camping
RV camping is one of the most popular forms of outdoor recreation. It offers a unique opportunity to experience the great outdoors without sacrificing the comfort of home. Whether you’re a seasoned RV enthusiast or new to the world of RV camping, there are several accessories that can enhance your camping experience. In this blog post, we’ll explore the top 5 RV accessories for camping in a camper or RV.
1. RV GPS Navigation System
The number one most important accessory for any RV enthusiast planning a long road trip is a GPS navigation system designed specifically for RVs and travel trailers. Unlike most traditional navigation systems, RV GPS units provide information about low bridges, narrow roads, and other obstacles that may be difficult to navigate in a large RV or travel trailer. Additionally, RV GPS units can help you find campgrounds and RV parks with ease, allowing you to plan your trip more efficiently.
One GPS we highly recommend is the Garmin RV 890. This feature packed RV GPS includes a choice of a 6.95-inch, 8-inch display or 10-inch display and customized routing based on your RV’s size and weight, the Garmin RV 890 is a popular choice among RVers. It also offers a directory of RV parks and services to help you plan your route.

Another option worth considering is an app or software GPS navigation system. There are several options with the most popular being Waze, which is known for offering up to date real time traffic data that often will include police reports. While Waze may be amazing for your commute, it is not suitable for long road trips that will take you through remote areas with out network coverage. Unfortunately, Waze does not offer the option to save maps to your device for offline use and it does not offer routing based on your vehicle size.
For the Florida Loop Destination we tried out CoPilot Mobile Navigation Built for RVers. This solution ran perfectly on the iPad. CoPilot is a cheaper alternative to specialized navigation devices, for example the Garmin 890-RV GPS retails for around $500, a one year subscription for CoPilot is $29.99 and includes RV specific features such as calculating the most efficient routes based on our RV’s dimensions and load type.
No matter which option you choose another important consideration is mounting your GPS system in a safe and secure manner. For this I do not recommend relying on a suction cup mount. While a great option for a rental car, we need something a bit more secure. I have always relied on RAM mounts for any mounting needs I have had in life. From mountain bikes and motorcycles to RV’s, off road buggy’s, boats and even cameras, RAM made the mount I needed. For the iPad, RAM had the perfect mount that allowed for us to safely mount the iPad to the dashboard of a RAM pick-up truck (Not the same company – RAM Truck, RAM Mounts)
The biggest draw back to a solid mount is that it will require drilling holes where generally you do not want to drill holes – your dashboard or center console. Provided that you pick the right spot the first time, the impact will be minimal and a small price to pay for the security.
2. Portable Grill

Suburban elite series 18 inch griddle
RV camping allows for a great deal of flexibility in terms of meals. Whether you prefer to cook indoors or outdoors, having the ability to prepare your own meals is a big part of the RV experience. While there are many options for cooking outdoors, a portable grill is a particularly great choice for RV enthusiasts who love to grill. Portable grills are an essential accessory for any RV trip as it allows you to prepare delicious meals on the go without the need for a full-sized grill.
Most newer campers seem to come with some sort of grill or griddle that will attach or slide out. Our Coachmen Freedom Express came with a Suburban 18″ Elite Series Griddle. This is the first griddle we have owned and have been pretty impressed with it. Before using it for the first time, you have to season the griddle itself. This requires an oven on high heat and a high smoke point oil, such as flax seed or canola oil. We used Organic Cast Iron Oil and Conditioner made from flax seed oil. This helps create a nonstick seasoning on all cast iron cookware. Make sure you set plenty of time aside to do this process, as you will need to repeat it several times.
We have found great recipes for Japanese Steak House style steak and shrimp stir-fry to mouth watering breakfasts on the beach. We have some great recipes here if you are interested in trying out some of out favorites.
As much as we like the griddle, nothing beats a hamburger or hot dog on the barbecue grill. In regard to flavor, a charcoal grill versus a propane grill – charcoal wins hands down every time. So it is essential to have a proper charcoal grill. We found the Weber Smokey Joe charcoal grill 14″ bundle to be a great purchase for our RV. The grill is compact and easy to store. If you get the bundle, it includes the premium carry bag, Rapidfire compact chimney starter and small premium tool set.
3. Portable Air Compressor
A portable air compressor is a must have accessory when road tripping in an RV or towing a travel trailer. It can be used to inflate tires, air mattresses, and other inflatable items. Additionally, a portable air compressor can be used to blow out debris from your RV’s air conditioning system, helping to improve its efficiency and prolong its lifespan.
Important features that will set apart an air compressor that is suitable for travel trailers and RV’s include extended power cord and air hose, faster inflation time for high volume tires and quiet operation. This is one item you can expect to pay a little extra for, but quality and reliability are key.
VIAIR makes a complete range of RV suitable air compressors that are high quality and meet the demands and criteria of camping with an RV’s and long road trips.
4. Outdoor Mats
Outdoor mats are a simple but essential accessory for RV enthusiasts. They provide a clean and comfortable surface to walk on outside your RV, making it easier to keep dirt and debris out of your RV. Additionally, outdoor mats can help prevent slips and falls, which is especially important for those with mobility issues. We happened to have found the perfect rug at Kohl’s. It is lightweight, easy to set up and put away, keeps dirt to a minimal, and the vibrant colors look great when everything is set up.
5. Solar Panels
Solar panels are an excellent accessory for RV enthusiasts who want to reduce their reliance on traditional power sources while providing a sustainable and eco-friendly way to power your RV when camping. With the right solar panel setup, you can power your RV lights, appliances, and other devices without the need for a generator or electrical hookup.
If you have purchased a travel trailer or RV and it is “Solar Ready”, be ready to be “disappointed”. Solar ready seems to have become a marketing ploy for RV manufacturers to use another keyword to get the attention of a potential buyers.
Typically, solar ready means no solar panel, no usage monitor and likely no controller. If you plan to use solar, the first thing you should do is determine your Wh demands and plan your solar panel system around that.
There are many brands and models of solar panels that can work with the controller that is possibly included in your RV. Here are some top brands and models to consider:
Renogy: Renogy is a well-known brand in the solar industry and offers a range of solar panels. The Renogy 100 Watt 12 Volt Monocrystalline Solar Panel is a popular option for RVers.
HQST: HQST is another popular brand that offers solar. The HQST 100 Watt 12 Volt Monocrystalline Solar Panel is a highly rated option for RVers.
Newpowa: Newpowa offers a range of solar panels that are compatible with most solar controllers. The Newpowa 100 Watt Monocrystalline Solar Panel is a highly rated option that is designed for use with RVs.
WindyNation: WindyNation offers a range of solar panels and solar panel kits. The WindyNation 100 Watt Solar Panel is a highly rated option for RVers.
It’s important to check the specifications of the solar panel or solar panel kit you are considering to ensure that it is compatible with the specific controller that came with your RV. The voltage and current output of the solar panel should match the input requirements of the controller. If you plan to use solar, one of the first things you will want to do is determine your Wh demands and plan your solar panel system around that.
